Why Battlefront Grannies
The elderly are one of the most vulnerable population groups. This is all the more truth at the times of war. They have neither the energy nor the means to escape to safety. They do their best to survive on the battle front. This is why in winter focus on the “battlefront grannies”. Their pensions are not enough for a decent meal, let alone heating. And Ukrainian winters can be really frosty! The forests are full of mines, so they have nowhere to go for wood.
Desire to Help is here to assist. With your donations, we provide fuel and firewood and deliver it to elderly ladies who live in areas where no one else can get to. Our material help also comes with a cheerful bonus – we chat with each grandmother over tea and put a lovely smile on her face.
We use your donations down to the last briquette
Finding the grannies
Our local volunteers are searching for lonely elderly ladies directly in the area. Some of them live in apartment blocks with central heating shot to pieces, others in old flimsy houses. We help specific people in need and we do not deal with politics.
Providing heat
We buy and transport firewood, coal and briquettes paid for from your donations. Everything is arranged locally to minimise costs and give jobs to locals. In the case of shortage, we cut timber on site in the mined forests.
Joy on both sides
We always connect each donor directly with a specific granny, showing them the authentic joy their gift can bring. You can clearly see what your donation has been used for and you get to know the person who, thanks to you, is now warm and knows that they are not left all alone.

Michal comes from Brno,
the team is all Ukrainian
In 2014, Michal, an electrician from Brno, set out to help civilians caught up in the emerging war for eastern Ukraine. He helped rebuild a destroyed children’s home, then got to the front line and had an adventure that would make for a novel. He shared his experience on Facebook and talked about it at a series of lectures in Brno. People wanted to contribute! And that is how the non-profit was founded in 2015. We use the donations to organise Safety Summer Camps and to fund the Heating for Battlefront Grannies project in winter. Over the years, we have gained enough experience working in the combat zone to know how to make most of the donations. I am coordinating everything from the Czech Republic now and a team of locals continues to help directly on the front line.
